Glutinous calotsera (aka hornwort or deer legs): photo of a horned mushroom and application

Kalocera sticky (Calocera viscosa) refers to conditionally edible mushrooms, that is, they can be eaten only after special pre-processing. Calocera is often called horned or horned due to its pronounced "horns".

Family: Dacrymycetaceae.

Description. The fruit body is 2 to 8 cm high, bushy, weakly branched. The "deer horns" of horned mushrooms are slightly sticky, as if glowing from the inside. The pulp of calotsera is elastic-gelatinous, rubbery, reddish, without any special taste or smell.

The horned mushroom bears fruit from the beginning of July to October, on rotten coniferous wood immersed or buried in the soil (usually grows strongly into the substrate), in coniferous and mixed forests, singly and in groups. It is often found throughout the forest zone of Russia.

Pay attention to the photo of the horned mushroom: the fruit body with pointed tips of twigs has a dark yellow or orange color and a very intricate shape.

Similar species. Many true yellow-colored horns are similar to calocera, but none of them has the characteristic cartilaginous-gelatinous-rubbery consistency of calocera.

Rogat: medicinal properties and other facts

Medicinal properties: Polysaccharides isolated from mycelial culture stop the growth of sarcoma-180 and Ehrlich's carcinoma by 90%. The mushroom contains 5-hydroxytryptophan, a precursor of serotonin and melatonin.

Collection and procurement rules: Collect fresh fruit bodies that have not begun to dry out or brown. Alcohol infusions are used.

Interesting Facts. Despite the obvious resemblance to horns, this mushroom has nothing to do with them. It belongs to shivering fungi, its relatives are shivers, gelatinous pseudo-jelly, auricularia and other gelatinous heterobasidiomycetes.

Are the horned mushrooms edible or not?

There is an unequivocal answer about whether the edible mushroom is a horned mushroom or not - you can eat calocera, it will not bring harm, but its taste is very doubtful. Many culinary experts consider these qualities to be very low due to the rubbery pulp of the calocera. For food purposes, horned fish is collected extremely rarely, it is used boiled, fried and dried.

Cooking Applications: In Bulgaria, because of its beautiful color, the edible horned mushroom is used boiled as a decoration in cold snacks. In addition, sticky calocera is added to the jellied meat before it solidifies.
