When boletus grows: mushroom picking season in the Moscow region

Butter mushrooms are by far the most common type of mushroom. They grow in the territory of Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, as well as in the northern latitudes of Australia and Africa. There are about 40 species in the Butter family. The oiler got its name because of its unusual cap: oily, wet and slippery to the touch. People say that the season for boletus mushrooms begins when the pine tree blooms. The approximate time for harvesting is late May, early June.

Butterlets grow very quickly during the harvesting season. It takes them several hours after a warm rain to acquire an attractive shape for a mushroom picker. But such a rapid growth also increases the speed of their deterioration. Fungi are easily damaged by insect larvae, which sometimes accounts for 60% of spoiled oil from all grown ones.

When can you start collecting oil

You can start collecting boletus in early June and continue until the first frost. Experienced mushroom pickers note that the best boletus is late. They are harvested in early September, especially after the first autumn rains. Then the diameter of the cap of adult mushrooms is on average 5-10 cm. For young boletus, the diameter of the cap does not exceed 3-5 cm. Such samples are the most delicious and can be prepared whole.

Butterlets can always be found in coniferous areas on sandy soil. In mixed forests, mushrooms grow near pine or cedar trees. Amateur mushroom pickers should remember an important point: boletus will never grow in swamps and damp places. The average temperature for fast growth of butter is about 16-18 ° C. Mushrooms love to grow in young spruce forests. Here they can be found with whole families, as boletus are called “herd mushrooms”. If you find one oiler, look for more nearby. The main thing is to carefully look around and under your feet. During the season of mushroom picking, experienced mushroom pickers advise not to rush to look for them in different places. The mycelium is usually large, so next to one oiler will certainly be its "congeners". You can collect a whole basket in one place. Remember this place and come back there in a couple of days.

Butterlets choose open lighted lawns, green moss, sandy hills. If the height of the stands exceeds 8-10 m, then the boletus will not grow in such a place. In addition, oil is also not found in a dense coniferous forest. The composition of the needles negatively affects the mycelium of oil. However, if growing conditions are favorable, then darkened areas can be covered with mushrooms. Therefore, beginners will like the "quiet hunt" for representatives of this species. The main thing is not to lose sight of the season when boletus grows.

In the Moscow region, the boletus season takes place at the same time as in other regions of Russia - from June to October. Traditional mushroom territories are the northern, northeastern and northwestern districts of the Moscow region. This year, the southwestern and southern parts of the capital region have also become fruitful areas.
