Lines: photo, description and medicinal properties, what mushrooms look like and what are their benefits

In the spring, at the same time as morels, lines (Gyromitra) appear in the forests: these mushrooms can also be considered natively Russian, since in other countries they are practically not common or are not popular. But in Russia, Gyromitra has been revered since ancient times: during the harvest season, when winter supplies ran out, few tables could do without these mushrooms.

Be very careful! Among the lines there are both edible and poisonous species. Giant lines are surprisingly tender and tasty mushrooms, and ordinary lines are poisonous. It is very simple to distinguish them: poisonous ordinary stitches have a dark brown-chestnut or brownish curly cap and an even and long leg, and the edible giant stitches have a very wide, bumpy leg, which is why they got this name, and they are much lighter in color - yellowish. As you can see, the line mushrooms look different, so it is difficult to make a mistake when collecting them.

Description of stitching giant

Habitats of giant stitches (Gyromitra gigas): in deciduous and mixed with birch forests, on humus-rich soil, they grow in small groups or singly.

Season: April May.

The cap has a height of 4-8 cm, and the entire mushroom is up to 15 cm high, and the thickness is even greater - up to 30 cm. A distinctive feature of the species is a shapeless brain-shaped cap with a folded-wavy surface, and the transverse dimensions of the mushroom are greater than the height.

As you can see in the photo, the color of the cap of this mushroom is light brown, the cap is attached to the stem:

The leg has a height of 3-7 cm, and the thickness is more - 6-10 cm. The leg is oval in cross-section, its color is off-white.

Pulp: white or grayish, without much taste or smell.

Plates. The leg in the upper part immediately passes into the cap, so there are no plates as such.

Variability. The color of the cap changes from light brown, later to dark brown and reddish brown.

Similar species. The edible stitching gigantic very vaguely resembles the inedible and pain-inducing stitching ordinary (Gyromitra esculenta), which differs in a less massive leg and a brown-chestnut hat.

Edibility: pre-boil for at least 25 minutes, after which they are fried, boiled, canned.

Edible, 3rd and 4th category.

What does an ordinary line look like

Habitats of common lines (Gyromitra esculenta): on sandy soil in mixed forests, among grass and next to rotting wood, they grow in small groups or singly.

Season: April May.

The hat has a diameter of 3-10 cm, a spherical shape. A distinctive feature of the species is a shapeless, cerebral-fold cap of a dark chestnut or brownish brown color. A hat, sometimes adhered to a leg.

The leg is short, thick, 2-6 cm high, 15-30 mm thick, grooved or folded, hollow, at first white, later ivory, has longitudinal notches.

Pulp: whitish, tough, without any special taste or smell.

Plates. The leg in the upper part immediately passes into the cap, so there are no plates as such.

Variability. The color of the cap varies from brown-chestnut to pink-chestnut and brown-brown.

Similar species. The description of the inedible ordinary line differs from the edible giant line (Gyromitra gigas). The giant has a massive oval or irregular leg with a cross section larger than the height of the mushroom.

Poisonous, toxic.

Here you can see a photo of both types of line mushrooms, the description of which is presented above:
